Stranded hikers in Montgomery County Rescued via Police-Operated Drone

Drone technology successfully aided police in locating stranded hikers that would have otherwise been difficult to rescue.

The terrain and lack of cellular service made it difficult to find the hikers' exact location. In past incidents in that area, searchers spent hours hiking.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office started operating drones in 2018, using them for search and rescue missions as well as for finding fugitives.

Rescued hiker recounts surviving week lost in woods.

One of the two missing hikers rescued in Snohomish County this week says it's a miracle that both survived their ordeal.

David James and Marshall "Buster" Cabe set out Aug. 16 for a five-day hike up Downey Creek trail, but a search was launched for them after they missed their return date by several days.

James said they ran out of food, and for five days, James survived on huckleberries and mushrooms. He slept on moss and a log, and used a raincoat for a blanket.

Remains of missing local hiker in Arizona canyon found by Search Teams

Harold “Joe” Smallwood, 82, went missing February 5 after he was hiking in Madera Canyon, located south of Tucson, Arizona. 

Smallwood was an Ohio resident who was staying in Arizona when he went missing. Rescue teams were unable to find him after a week-long search.

#BreakingNews: Body of Missing Elderly Hiker Found in Mt. Rainier

A massive search effort in Mount Rainier to find a man who’s been missing since Memorial Day weekend ended earlier this weekend.

Dozens of searchers have been looking for 72-year-old Chang Soo Kim in the Beaver Creek forest area, who went missing after splitting up from his family to look for ferns.

An extensive search was launched and continued for five days, then resumed earlier this weekend.

According to Pierce County Sheriff's Department, the body of Chang Soo Kim was found in deep mud during a grid search at the bottom of a valley in Elbe Hills shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday.

#BreakingNews: Searchers Locate Hiker lost in Arkansas Wilderness

A Texas man who went missing a week ago while hiking through a remote area of Arkansas has been found safe, according to authorities.

On June 1st, Joshua McClatchy, 38, texted his mom saying he was lost and in need of help. After days of searching, McClatchy, who was described as an experienced hiker, was found late Friday in a wilderness area about 105 miles from Little Rock.

Searchers spotted him from a helicopter using infrared technology, but it reportedly took rescue teams an hour to reach him and several hours to get him out of the area.  He was said to be dehydrated but otherwise in good spirits after his rescue.

#MissingHiker Report: Hikers Missing At Mount Rainer Found, Conditions Unknown

Two hikers missing at Mount Rainier National Park have been found.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Office said on Twitter Monday night that the men were found and that "teams are working to bring the hikers down the trail to safety." Information on their exact condition was unclear.

Volunteers, 4x4 unites, K9 rescue and local Search & Rescue were deployed for the search after two hikers missing since Saturday.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers responded to 9 search and rescue incidents in the Adirondacks in the past few days.

Many of the rescues were the result of ankle injuries, minor injuries or equipment failure.

What's alarming is the increase in rescues, accidents, disappearances and deaths in the past 3 weeks throughout the hiking and travel communities.

 I have a good amount of faith in the hiking community, but one can only surmise that the increase in Social Media and photo density of far-off, picturesque and alluring natural destinations has triggered more and more unprepared folks to enter TRUE wilderness areas. Failure to have proper footwear, a first aid kit, or a method to reach out in case an emergency happens has become more prevalent than ever. Luckily, these are rescue reports, which is the BEST CASE SCENARIO for a bad situation.

While the "need" to bring more people into nature and appreciating our wilderness areas remains the same, the balance of cost and detriment to the small tourism-based economies for nearby towns is hard to calculate. Rescue's aren't free, and even if individuals are fined for their lapse in judgement or poor decisions, there's no accounting for whether the costs of the rescue will truly be re-cooped.

Why is this helpful?

Well, the PCT isn't as popular as the AT, and if you spot someone else with "too much" of the EXACT SAME GEAR, that's enough for any rational person to be alarmed and contact authorities. Alternately, in the worst case scenario, if remains turn up and these items are within a reasonable distance, it helps to identify the body.
